Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? You’re not alone.

Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about our club.

How do I join the club?

It couldn’t be simpler. Click the Join Us button you see at the top right of this page. Complete the form, click Send, and we’ll take it from there.

We’ll reach out to you at the email you provide, usually within a day (unless we’re all off fishing somewhere, which can happen during summer months). In the initial response you’ll receive from our Membership folks, you will find an invoice for your first year of dues. Pay it and you’re in.

You’ll also receive emails from our club officers welcoming you and letting you know how to get started. And you will be given immediate access to our private Google Forum where you can start connecting with other club members.

2

Do you have family memberships?

Unfortunately, we do not. Instead, we try to keep our annual dues as low as possible for everyone.

3

Can someone under the age of 18 join the club?

Fishers under the age of 18 are always welcome at any club meeting, event, or outing when accompanied by a parent or guardian. However, our insurance prohibits individuals from joining the club and attending on their own until they turn 18.

For someone under the age of 18 to participate in club activities, their parent or guardian would need to be a club member.

If you are looking for a fun gift for your 18-year-old son, daughter, or grandchild, give them the gift of fly fishing with one of our annual memberships. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate a big birthday.

4

What type of fly fishing does your club mainly support?

We aim to provide outings in line with the interests of our club members. Traditionally, most of these outings have centered on stillwater or lake fishing. This usually requires a pontoon boat or other type of flotation, in addition to specific safety gear.

But as our membership continues to grow and diversify, that is shifting to include more focus on rivers, streams, and beach fishing.

5

Does your club do any stream or beach fishing?

Yes. Many of our members are increasingly interested in fly fishing on local rivers, streams, and the Puget Sound (which offers a unique advantage: it never closes!). For this reason, you will start to see more organized outings to rivers, streams, and beaches in 2024 and 2025.

Additionally, members are always welcome and encouraged to connect with other fishers through our private Google Forum. This allows you to meet up at any location you want to fish.

If you have a location or type of fly fishing you’re interested in, we would love to hear about it. Contact us to be connected with our Outings chair and make your suggestion.

6

I’m new to fly fishing. Can I get some assistance?

Absolutely! We have dozens of experienced club members who act as mentors. Some have fished for most of their lives. All are willing and eager to help new fishers learn.

These folks are available at every organized outing. Some are also willing to meet up at local lakes to help you get started or hone your skills.

No gear? No problem. You can always borrow the necessary gear to get you started. More than one of us has a garage full of gear collected over the years. (Seriously… Garage. Full.)

Additionally, we offer an introductory fly fishing class and beginners fly tying class each winter. These classes are also open to the public and have become extremely popular. So if you’re interested, don’t wait to register when they open up.

7

Can I learn to tie flies?

You bet! In fact, this is our most popular class, both within the club and the general public.

We offer two classes each winter, a beginning fly tying class and an intermediate fly tying class. Both are designed to give you a solid introduction to the most commonly used materials and techniques.

Many students have told us they were able to go right out and catch fish on the flies they tied in class (once it was legal to do so, of course).
