We had a great turnout for Saturday’s conservation event—nearly 20 volunteers, including a crew from the UW Foster School of Business completing their service requirement.

New member James F. Chang and his daughter Michelle joined us too—Michelle’s favorite part of the day? “The cutting!” (We were trimming back grass around our young plants, and she went all in!)

Justin and Renee Pelan also showed up in a big way— Justin Pelan recently relocated to the area and has already been chasing trout on the Cedar River while picking up the sport.

🌧️ The weather was misty but held off just long enough—we got the last plant mulched just before a proper downpour hit at noon.

💪 We moved a serious amount of mulch over the bridge and into the restoration area, tucking in our native plants with cardboard and bark to help them thrive this summer. We also cleared weeds, picked up loads of trash, and left the beach better than we found it.

🐾 Friendly reminder for beachgoers: If you're walking your dog, please pack out used waste bags—leaving them behind in the bushes just means someone else has to handle it later. Let’s keep it clean for everyone!

Bonus moment: we shared the shoreline with a wedding crew setting up for their 2PM ceremony. Huge congrats to the happy couple! 💍

Preliminary forecast looks good. But remember to bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast. Also bring water and a snack.

Hand tools and gloves will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you wish. Please do not bring power tools or herbicides.

Stillwater Success at Lone Lake! 🛶☀️

We couldn’t have asked for a better day for our club’s lake fishing clinic yesterday. Under sunny skies and calm water, a great group of new stillwater anglers joined mentors Tom Langley, Dennis Potter, and Greg Sisson for a hands-on workshop covering gear, boat setup, trolling techniques, and more.

Tom kicked things off with a shoreline session on reading lake water, then we hit the water where everyone landed fish—including Amy Phillips, who caught one on her own hand-tied fly after sailing through our Beginning Fly Tying class this past winter!

🎉 Special shoutout to Justin, fresh from Ohio, for getting his first fish in his new boat. 🎣

Thanks to everyone who came out, asked smart questions, and made it such a fun, rewarding day on the water. Stay tuned for more clinics to come!

Thanks to the fantastic turnout at our last event, we installed nearly 90 native plants including Tall Oregon Grape, Black Twinberry, Mock Orange, Red-flowering Currant, Salal, Shore Pine, Snowberry, Sword Fern, and Vine Maple.

This time, we’ll be checking on these new plants and spreading mulch to help retain moisture and protect them during upcoming summer temperatures. Time permitting, we’ll also pick up litter and clear invasive species such as blackberry or ivy.

A healthy, wooded beach, rich with native vegetation, will cool stream temperatures, provide habitat for birds and fish, and slow erosion.

Representatives from the Snohomish County Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will be on site, along with Picnic Point Forest Stewards and members of Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds.

🎣 Winthrop Outing Recap

The club’s annual trip to Winthrop last weekend delivered some stunning views and mixed fishing reports. John Wendt hit the water early at Big Twin and picked up one fish on a squirmy wormy fly before the bite died off.

👉 Other anglers mentioned a possible winterkill had impacted the lake. 👈

From there, John joined Barry Hutton, Paul Goldberg, and Mike Thornton at Rat Lake. John landed one 18-inch rainbow on a Christmas Fly but lost five more. Paul trolled a black leech fly with moderate sink line and brought in the 18-inch trout (pictured here) while fishing from his float tube. John also spotted a cluster of fish around a geological feature that caught his eye and worked for 2 hours but couldn’t entice a single bite – only to learn later they were spawning.

Meanwhile, Greg Sisson and Curt Clausen headed to Frost Lake, where Greg found steady action, landing 10 planters around 13 inches. No big ones, but plenty of fish to keep him busy.

The group wrapped up the weekend at Little Green Lake after hearing it was the hottest spot in the area. John caught two and Paul landed four before the wind picked up and made chironomid fishing the only viable option.

🍽️ As always, Barbara Stolzenburg's (@bstolzen) annual dinner at her home was a highlight of the trip – a chance to swap fish tales, share a great meal, and relax after a weekend on the water. Thank you, Barbara, once again for your generous hospitality!

We wrapped up our Central Washington swing and stayed into fish at Rocky Ford, followed by a quick stop at Dry Falls, earlier this week.

Rocky Ford Recap: Greg continued to find success using bloodworm patterns, while Robert spotted trout actively feeding on scuds—right on the mark for this spring-fed fishery. One particularly feisty rainbow at Rocky Ford gave Greg the slip after a lightning-fast run he described as “supersonic.”

Project Healing Waters Yakima River Float – April 2025

What a great river! The North Sound Chapter of Project Healing Waters hosted its first major multi-day event on the Yakima River from Friday to Sunday. Two members of Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds, Dennis Potter and Tim Bennett, participated in the event. Tim, who serves as Assistant Program Lead for the chapter, also served as a boat captain and instructor for the first day.

Even though high winds were predicted for Saturday, the river stayed calm on both Friday and Saturday. Fishing was technical but rewarding — and the river was definitely buggy, with stonefly adults flying throughout the canyon.

On Day 1, Dennis fished alongside his daughter, Lynn Clark (a veteran of Iraq), in Tim's boat. The recommended setup was a Pat’s Rubber Legs with a trailing #14 pheasant tail nymph, but with so many stoneflies in the air, fishing dry flies became hard to resist.

On Day 2, Dennis switched boats and fished with Jeff Sturm, the North Sound Chapter Lead who organized the event. With stoneflies continuing to hatch, Dennis fished a #4 orange-bodied adult stonefly pattern nearly all day. Other participants found success with Chubby Chernobyls and small nymph droppers.

By Sunday, the predicted winds arrived, and most groups traveled home. River flows dropped over the weekend from around 2400 cfs to 1800 cfs, offering changing but manageable floating conditions.

Well... we gave it an honest go. But in this year’s Annual Fly Fishing Challenge, the Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers out-fished us fair and square. The Golden Trout Trophy has gone back to their side of Hood Canal for another year.

Big congratulations — sincerely yet through slightly gritted teeth — to Bruce Savaglio of OPFF, who landed the winning fish at 18.5 inches, just edging out our own Scott Donahue’s impressive 18-incher.

Despite the competitive spirit, the real highlight was the shared time on the water. Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds always enjoy fishing with our sister club. They're a great group of people, and the camaraderie is what makes this tradition so worthwhile.

The day brought blue skies, rising fish, and post-fish feasting — chili, grilled chicken, Italian sausage, coleslaw, and potato salad.

He also provided outstanding river education—explaining structure, flows, and why he chose each stop. Paired with real-time casting tips, every angler walked away from this trip sharper and more confident. We’re already lining up future outings with Andy on the west side this summer.

Greg Mills was equally valuable, sharing his favorite flies from his personal box, helping with rigging setups, offering casting instruction, and breaking down how to read water in spring flows. That knowledge paid off—club member Ryan May (@edmondsangler) landed his first fish of 2025, a beautiful 21-inch rainbow trout that jumped and ran hard all the way to the net!

BIG WEEKEND – PART 1: We did some spring fly fishing on Gibbs Lake last Saturday and ran into quite a few really decent fish!

Seven of us made it out to the Olympic Peninsula and had a blast. The day started kind of slow with only a couple fish to the net. Then about 2:00 PM, it took off! Greg Sisson and Scott Donahue were netting fish on almost every cast. Liam Greenmun, one of our newest members and a student from this winter’s fly tying class, landed two fish from his kayak (one of which is pictured here)! Then Todd Obenauer rounded out the day by muscling up the hog you see in this post. What a fun day!

BIG WEEKEND – PART 1: We did some spring fly fishing on Gibbs Lake last Saturday and ran into quite a few really decent fish!

Seven of us made it out to the Olympic Peninsula and had a blast. The day started kind of slow with only a couple fish to the net. Then about 2:00 PM, it took off! Greg Sisson and Scott Donahue were netting fish on almost every cast. Liam Greenmun, one of our newest members and a student from this winter’s fly tying class, landed two fish from his kayak (one of which is pictured here)! Then Todd Obenauer rounded out the day by muscling up the hog you see in this post. What a fun day!

Float Tube Trekking and Big Rainbows: A Spring Fly Fishing Report from the Potholes

Here’s club member James Glasgow (@jgfanfare), mid-adventure after a 2+ mile hike through the sagebrush to reach what his buddies would only call “Secret Lake #7” in Washington’s Potholes region. Float tube on his back, rod in hand, and Woolly Buggers packed and ready.

The hike? Brutal.

The payoff? A couple thick rainbows and a reminder that the best fishing stories don’t always start off easy.

James made this trip in late March – prime time to target early-season trout in desert lakes like those scattered across the Potholes. It’s rugged, remote country where your float tube becomes less of a luxury and more of a beast of burden. You’ll feel every pound by mile two.

His advice? Next time, maybe bring a lighter setup—and one or two more forthcoming friends.

Last night, 45 of our members gathered for an evening with Steve Duda (@stephenpduda), author of “River Songs: Moments of Wild Wonder in Fly Fishing.” Steve read several selections from his book, capturing in words why we love fly fishing – the awe, the humor, the wild moments that stay with you for the rest of your life.

This structure ensures 98% of Patagonia’s profits now help combat climate change and protect wild places – an inspiring model of what a business can do for the planet.

Steve wrapped up by teasing a piece he has coming this fall in @theflyfishjournal, and we can’t wait to read it. Then he stayed afterward to chat and sign copies of River Songs, making the evening even more memorable.

Just a quick note for those planning a trip: the steelhead season on the Skagit and Sauk rivers will close this Friday, April 11, due to lower-than-expected wild steelhead returns. That makes Thursday, April 10 the last day to get out there.

WDFW and co-managing tribes have updated their forecast and are seeing fewer wild steelhead than originally anticipated. To help protect the run and ensure future fishing opportunities, they’ve made the tough call to close things down early this year.

We're disappointed for sure—these rivers are iconic, and many of us look forward to this season all year. But this move helps conserve wild fish and keeps us aligned with the long-term plan for sustainable steelhead fisheries in the region.

Fishing’s been tough, but when we can sneak a cast in, blood worms and black leeches are doing the trick. Gotta work for ‘em, but fish are getting caught!

Check out this vibrant leech pattern tied by club member Tom Langley, a fresh variant of his Langley Leech. Captured in action inside a Fly Tester from Flymen Fishing Company, this fly is designed to suspend and move naturally—making it irresistible to trout and other freshwater predators.

Tom debuted the color combo for this pattern last Saturday at our lake fishing clinic, where new anglers and mentors got a firsthand look at its fish-catching potential.

Saturday’s hands-on Stillwater Fly Fishing Workshop at Ballinger Lake Center was a fantastic success! Though we had to pivot from our original Lone Lake plans, the indoor setting provided a perfect environment for learning and skill-building.

With six new fishers, six dedicated mentors, and several experienced club members, everyone had the chance to refine their techniques, ask questions, and gain confidence for their next outing. Steve Ruppert even brought his Fly Tester, giving participants a real-time view of how their flies behave in moving water!

💡 Highlights of the day:
✔️ Rod, reel, and line setup
✔️ Key knots to assemble your line securely and quickly
✔️ Custom leader building (with the ideal setup for getting your line to depth in a lake)
✔️ Casting practice (despite a little rain and a LOT of wind!)

What an incredible day! Forty volunteers, from age 3 to 83, came together at Picnic Point Beach on a quiet, foggy winter morning this past Saturday. Equipped with shovels, gloves, and tons of enthusiasm, we dug in—and in no time, we’d transformed the landscape.

In just one hour, the group installed 89 native plants, including tall Oregon grape, black twinberry, mock orange, red-flowering currant, salal, snowberry, sword fern, and vine maple. These will help stabilize the bank, reduce erosion, and support local wildlife, ensuring this stretch of coastline remains healthy for years to come.

With time to spare, we spread out along the beach and picnic area, filling bags with trash and leaving the area noticeably cleaner.

Beyond the work we accomplished, another high point of the day was the teamwork and camaraderie. Whether it was helping two young first-time volunteers plant their first shrubs or swapping fish stories while hauling mulch, the energy was inspiring!

HUGE thank you to everyone who showed up and made this event such a success. Special thanks to Jay Tavarez-Brown with the @snohomishhealthyforestproject for her leadership and vast knowledge of all things with leaves. Big thanks also to Park Ranger Carl Runge with @snocoparks for his support in providing the county’s tool trailer. We’re lucky to have you both!

“Cultivating native plants reduces the need for watering and artificial fertilizer,” said Helena Puche, OFF Conservation Chair. “This lowers maintenance costs as the native plants adapt to the timing of the seasons, harshness of the weather, and water availability of the particular area they evolve within. Native plants are also typically adapted to surviving local pests and, therefore, do not need chemical pesticides.”

“Another prime example of a native plant and its benefits is the tall Oregon grape which feeds and shelters wildlife,” Puche said. “Its berries nourish grouse, pheasants, robins, sparrows, and other fruit eaters (frugivores), including foxes and raccoons. Painted lady butterflies, mason bees, and other invertebrates drink its flower nectar. Small animals find cover in its densely clustered leaves.”

This week, we focused on midge patterns, tying the Griffith’s Gnat and the Partridge and Orange Soft Hackle—two timeless flies that test precision and thread control. These small patterns require careful hackle sizing, a skill we spent time honing to ensure proportion and balance.

We also had great discussions on soft hackle variations, with club president Greg Sisson sharing his success with the Carey Special, and John introducing a historical twist—using Cul de Canard (CDC) for added natural buoyancy in dry flies. The AP Emerger also got a mention as a versatile stillwater fly.

With only one class left, we're gearing up for a strong finish next week. We’ll be tying the Pheasant Tail Nymph and Foam Beetle, bringing together all the techniques we’ve practiced throughout the course.

“Cultivating native plants reduces the need for watering and artificial fertilizer,” said Helena Puche, OFF Conservation Chair. “This lowers maintenance costs as the native plants adapt to the timing of the seasons, harshness of the weather, and water availability of the particular area they evolve within. Native plants are also typically adapted to surviving local pests and, therefore, do not need chemical pesticides.”

A healthy, wooded beach, rich with native vegetation, will cool stream temperatures, slow erosion and provide habitat for birds and fish. Pink salmon return to Puget Sound in numbers this summer, and we want to give them every advantage possible!

Volunteers will plant native species along the beach in areas cleared during previous conservation events. Plants that will be provided include:
• Tall Oregon-grape
• Black twinberry
• Mock orange
• Red-flowering currant
• Salal
• Shore pine
• Snowberry
• Sword fern
• Vine maple

Representatives from the Snohomish County Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will be on site, along with Picnic Point Forest Stewards.

This event is open to the public. All ages and levels of ability are welcome. Tools, plants, and all other necessary materials will be provided.

BIG thanks to Colorado’s foremost fly fishing guide, author, and fly tier, Pat Dorsey (@patdorseyflyfishing). He stopped by our February meeting Tuesday night and presented a talk on fly fishing tailwaters throughout Colorado. It was equal parts information and inspiration!

We got his preferred line setup (including the recipe for his yarn indicator). We got slide after slide of key fly patterns that match the hatch. And we got the secret to why tailwaters make such productive fisheries (hint: it has to do with water temp when it gets released from a dam).

On top of all that, the 50 club members who turned up last night walked away with Dorsey’s Top 10 places to fly fish in Colorado. Not a bad list to have, and one we’re already using to plan some walk-and-wades with him and Chris in the coming season.

If you’re not a club member or just missed the meeting last night, you’ll have several other chances to hear Pat talk about fishing opportunities in Colorado this weekend at the Fly Fishing Show in Bellevue.
