Spring fishing season is right around the corner. Come spend an evening at the vise with us as we get ready together.

You’ll tie three deadly stillwater patterns (Bloodworm, Red Chironomid, and Black Chironomid with Silver Wire), pick up techniques you can take straight to the water, and enjoy some good company with fellow anglers.

John will demo each pattern live in the room, walking through every fly step by step before everyone ties along. This class is designed for tiers with some prior experience and offers a relaxed, welcoming space to learn, connect, and sharpen your skills.

Bring your tying tools, black & red 70 denier thread, and small silver wire. Hooks and other materials provided.

Her presentation will center on creeks and small streams she grew up fishing – just a short ferry ride from Edmonds. She will cover small creek and stream techniques, and offer tips for fishing along the Hood Canal, and further north toward Port Townsend and Sequim.

Club meetings are free and open to the public. No tickets required. Doors open at 5:30 pm for in-person meetings.

ABOUT J. MICHELLE SWOPE
J. Michelle Swope is a lifelong angler who owns and operates Crow Creek Fly Shop and guide service in Roslyn, WA. She has been a guide and instructor for over 30 years and teaches casting, fly tying, rowing, and reading water.

She grew up fishing the Olympic Peninsula and caught her first fish at age two on the Elwha River—an early connection that shaped a lifetime on the water. Today, J. Michelle brings that same sense of curiosity and generosity into her teaching, helping anglers build skills while also encouraging confidence, stewardship, and connection.

J. Michelle is a founding member of United Women on the Fly, where she has been involved since the organization’s creation, supporting community outreach and serving as a military contact. She also currently serves as a board member and Advocacy Committee Chair for www.ifishibelong.org.

Additionally, J. Michelle is a member of the Washington State Council of Trout Unlimited and is involved in a conservation project on the White Salmon River.

Friday Follies lived up to its theme this month — Gear Through the Lens of Experience. We gathered last Friday morning with 23 members, including three new faces. Room was full. Conversation was easy. Focus stayed practical.

Biggest takeaway was simple: trust what works. Not the label. Not the chart. Experience changes how we set up rods, choose lines, and carry gear. Many anglers now bring multiple rods pre-rigged, which saves time and keeps you fishing.

Safety drove some of strongest discussion. Dry suits came up for winter fishing as the preferred choice over waders for warmth - especially when you find yourself doing the backstroke in a river. PFD choices also mattered. Traditional PFDs were favored over inflatables, again, especially for rivers. Camo vests were discouraged (the goal is to be visible so you can be found). We talked about wading staffs, belt knives, spare clothes, and locking carabiners. Small habits. Big impact.

Fishing talk came back to fundamentals. Fly size matters more than fly color. Loop knots improve fly action. Start lakes shallow. Go deeper once you find fish. Troll first. Anchor later. Simple adjustments. Real results.

Another reminder that OFF isn’t about having all answers. It’s about showing up. It’s about sharing experience. It’s about getting better together, season after season.

Peter works at the heart of Sage’s rod-design team, leading R&D and product planning efforts that shape the company’s newest technologies. At our February meeting, he’ll offer a behind-the-scenes look at how rods are designed—how choices in materials, fiber systems, and tapers influence strength, feel, recovery, and the overall personality of a rod on the water.

Whether you’re a gear enthusiast or simply curious about how rods become what they are, this program offers a rare window into Sage’s design process from someone who helps shape it.

Over his 15 years with the company, he has worked across nearly every step of the process—starting in hands-on fabrication, advancing through R&D, and ultimately helping lead Sage’s design and technology work.

Recognized as one of Sage’s lead fly-rod designers, @peter__knox has played a central role in the development of the R8 Core, SALT R8, and other advanced rod families. His work focuses on how material choices, composite layups, and taper design come together to create rods with distinct feel and purpose.

Week 2 of our Beginning Fly Tying Class focused on building confidence and control at the vise—and our students are making real progress. 👏 👏 👏

This past week, we tied two classic patterns: the Zebra Midge and the Brassie, both proven staples for imitating small aquatic insects when fish are feeding subsurface. Along the way, students practiced essential skills like thread control, creating clean segmented bodies, working with wire and dubbing, and refining their whip finish.

We also spent time talking about materials—especially the role UV-reflective dubbing can play in small patterns. What appears subtle to us under normal light can reflect far more visual information underwater, helping flies separate from their background just enough to suggest life when fish are keyed in on fine details. Used thoughtfully, UV is a quiet enhancer—not a requirement—but an important concept to understand as tiers progress.

Most importantly, we’re proud of how quickly everyone is picking things up. From first wraps to cleaner finishes, the improvement from week to week has been rewarding to watch.

Next up: Woolly Buggers—one of the most versatile and fish-catching flies ever created. We can’t wait to see what comes off the vises tomorrow night!

That experience sent him down the fly fishing path and shaped his love of moving water, trout, and time spent outdoors. He joined OFF in 2024 to learn, connect, and give back—and quickly jumped in.
As Chairperson for river and stream outings, Eric leads the Stream Team and organizes OFF’s moving-water trips. His focus is creating well-run, enjoyable outings that help members learn from one another, fish great water, and spend more time doing what brought us together in the first place.

They learned how different materials—like standard chenille, plush chenille, and modern Squirmy-style materials—behave at the vise. We also covered basic hook anatomy and the importance of building durable flies.

Best of all, everyone jumped right in. A couple students even took on the challenge of a whip finish on their very first night. That’s no small feat.

Huge credit to our new tyers for their focus, patience, and willingness to try something new. We’re excited to keep building from here in the weeks to come!

Please join us in welcoming Steve Ruppert as Co-President of Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds. A devoted stillwater angler with roots in bass fishing and saltwater adventures, Steve brings curiosity, humor, and a deep appreciation for time on the water—and the people you share it with.

Steve returns to the board after previously serving OFF in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President and Communications Director. As Co-President, he helps keep the club informed, organized, and moving forward. Steve oversees member communications, manages the membership list, coordinates board meetings, and serves as our primary liaison with the Lake Ballinger Center. He also supports OFF’s communications and education programs, helping ensure members stay connected, supported, and in the loop, both on and off the water.

Steve returns to the board after previously serving OFF in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President and Communications Director. As Co-President, he helps keep the club informed, organized, and moving forward. Steve oversees member communications, manages the membership list, coordinates board meetings, and serves as our primary liaison with the Lake Ballinger Center. He also supports OFF’s communications and education programs, helping ensure members stay connected, supported, and in the loop, both on and off the water.

Remembering John Townsell

We’re deeply saddened to share that our longtime friend and Olympic Fly Fishers of Edmonds member, John Townsell, has passed away.

If you ever met John, you likely remember his smile first. His eyes carried the warmth of it. He had a steady calm about him that put you at ease, a deep, easy voice, and a way of speaking that made you slow down with him. Talking with John felt like talking to someone you’d known for years, even if you’d only just met.

John was one of the most welcoming members of our club. He loved sharing his time and knowledge — whether it was tying a fly, talking through a technique, or pointing someone toward a favorite local water. He was a longtime volunteer at our annual winter fly tying class, where countless new tiers got their start under his patient guidance.

What set John apart was how he made people feel: seen, supported, and valued. When he talked with you, he was fully with you — generous with his wisdom and genuinely interested in your experience on and off the water.

We will miss his kindness, his depth of expertise, and the quiet, steady way he helped shape the heart of our club. This winter, when we gather for our fly tying class, we’ll feel the empty space where his warmth and steady presence have reliably been for so many years.

He will be our guest speaker tonight November 11, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at Lake Ballinger Center.

Vince’s presentation, “Winter Euro Nymphing in Western Washington,” offers a clear, practical look at one of the most effective cold-season techniques in fly fishing. Designed for anglers of all levels, the session will walk through how to rig, read water, and present flies for consistent success during December, January, and February—when most rods are gathering dust.

Since being bit by the Euro (tight-line) nymphing bug in 2020, Vince has spent the past five years immersed in perfecting this method for Western Washington’s diverse rivers. Drawing from global tactics and countless hours on the water, he’ll show how subtle changes in setup and presentation can make all the difference when winter flows run cold and clear. Expect a lively, hands-on talk filled with real-world advice you can put to use right away.

🍁🎣Lone Lake – Part 2: Fish, Flies & Fall Camaraderie

Lone Lake delivered a fitting finale to what will likely be our last stillwater outing before winter weather shuts everything down. The fishing required patience, but the day was rich with learning, color, and a few standout moments.

Throughout the day, those broken, textured clouds kept shifting overhead — dramatic streaks and layered patterns that showed up in nearly every photo taken from the water.

GREG & OTTO – Greg’s grandson, Otto, hooked two trout and had several more strikes—including a brief showdown with the fish he dubbed “Walter” (a.k.a. “Big Jim”). The winning fly was the White Langley Leech, tied by Greg. With that many hits, Otto easily could’ve tallied five or six fish.

JEN – Jen went two-for-two with very different presentations: one trout came out of the north shallows on a nymph suspended beneath a dry—classic stillwater sight-indicator setup—and the second, brighter fish inhaled an orange-and-yellow booby-eye fly stripped with short pulses.

IRENE – Irene connected with her first fish within 15 minutes—luck some of us half-jokingly attributed to her stylish new haircut, though it’s likely more to do with her steady, confident presentations. Two fish landed on green flies along the east shore, with a third solid hit she just missed.

DAN – November surprise: Dan hooked into bass. Not trout—bass! A bunch of them. An unexpected twist for November, but a solid afternoon of learning lake structure and dialing in float-tube handling.

Weeds on the east end made things tough, pushing us into deeper lanes down the middle or toward the south end. Trout concentrated along weed edges in roughly 8–12 feet, responding best to sinking lines paired with darker leeches and buggers.

A very Whidbey bonus: Bill Lundin even spotted orca spouts from the highway off-ramp on the way in—just a flash, but enough to remind us how special these waters are.

With winter weather moving in fast, this was likely our lake-season closer — and Lone offered up a fitting send-off.

The morning arrived calm and glassy. Sunlight filtered through the haze and painted the shoreline gold, giving us that rare mirror-flat surface that only appears a few days each year before cold fronts and storms settle in. Anglers launched around 10am and drifted into the stillness, pontoons and tubes cutting clean lines across the water.

Fall color still held along the shore — bright yellows tucked against dark evergreens — and the lake mirrored everything back with perfect symmetry: trees, clouds, reflections, and the soft shift of birds overhead.

Before launch, a couple of local residents stopped by to offer friendly advice on flies, lines, and depth. Their suggestions — “green leeches, slow and steady… fish are hanging around ten feet” — set a helpful, collaborative tone for the day. Whidbey hospitality at its best!

By mid-morning the sun had climbed, and the first fish stories started carrying across the water. Part 2 captures the action, the surprises, and everything that unfolded once the fishing kicked in — but the morning alone was worth the trip.

River Season Closer — North Fork Stillaguamish (Oct 18)

A quiet, moody wrap to our 2025 river season yesterday morning. Fall color lined the banks, gray skies held until early afternoon, and we managed five good hours before the rain arrived right on cue at 1 p.m.

The river ran relatively clear but dark—cool in the low 50s °F. It fished tough. Kieran and Ryan each brought a pink to hand, with a few extra taps. We saw good trout, but most were hunkered down and territorial, more focused on guarding their space from the pinks than feeding. Eagles wheeled overhead, and deer moved through the woods and underbrush along the banks. The smell of late fall was everywhere—wet leaves and damp forest.

Flies in our rotation today: Reverse Spiders, soft hackles, and small leeches.

Takeaway: When salmon fill the system and trout turn defensive, shorter swings, longer hangs, and smaller profiles can make a difference. As Kieran pointed out: changes like this are also a way to appreciate the rhythm of the seasons. 🍂

So after multiple outings on the Sauk, Snoqualmie, Skagit, and Stillaguamish this year, we’re marking it well fished! 🐟

And because no day of fly fishing—local or otherwise—is complete without good food: on the way home, Ryan stopped at @nuttysjunkyard and had one of the best burger-and-fries he’s had in a long time. Try their signature fry sauce—tastes like a smoked thousand island. Highly recommended if you find yourself anywhere near Arlington.

What a day! With the sun streaming through the windows and rods being test-cast on the back lawn, more than 70 Olympic Fly Fishers gathered on Sunday for one of our favorite events of the year — our Annual Member Appreciation Party and Fundraiser.

First, a huge thank-you to our president, Greg Sisson, for the countless hours of planning, donation-soliciting, and gear organizing that made the day such a success. As always, his leadership and energy were the backbone of the entire event.

📣 Highlights from the day:

• Burke Bruttig brought the laughs with fish-flavored dad jokes and movie trivia as our spirited Master of Ceremonies.

• Jim Black, our FFI Certified Casting Instructor, was honored as Member of the Year for the countless hours he devotes to teaching members both basic and advanced casting. Jim is one of the pillars of our club!

• Ryan May received the Fly Fishers International Bill Mackay Conservation Award for his ongoing leadership in conservation and habitat stewardship.

🍕 Special thanks to @perrinvillepizza for the delicious artisan pizzas and salads, and to Emily Disbennett for organizing the food and beverages and serving up the beer and wine. A big shout-out as well to Mirin Dewar for her help throughout the event, and for calling raffle winners with patience, poise, enthusiasm, and a smile.

We’re also grateful to Mike Truax (on behalf of Bill McDonald), George and Linda Selvy, Dave Skaar, John Wendt, Dennis Potter, and Paul Lesh for their generous support — and to every member who donated gear, tied flies, crafted nets, or volunteered their time. The creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship in this club are unmatched — and it’s a big part of what makes days like this so special.

Picnic Point Creek was running low and slow in the tall grass with the lack of rain. Yet earlier this month, it met Puget Sound during a bull tide—right as the pink salmon run came to a close. It was a vivid reminder of why this work matters: keeping the creek and shoreline healthy for fish, birds, and all the life that depends on these waters (us included!).

💚 We’re grateful to club members Bill Lundin, Irene Mitchell, and OFF's Conservation Chair Helena Puche, and to community friends Paul, Mickie, and Conrad, who joined us on the beach and helped make quick work of a big job.

There is free parking on site. However, this lot can fill up on weekends and sunny days, so try to arrive early or carpool if possible.

Please layer your clothing appropriately for weather conditions. Wear long sleeves and long pants you don't mind getting dirty, wet, and muddy, along with sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Lightweight jackets, hats, sunscreen, and water bottles are also recommended.

Forecast looks good. But remember to bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast. Also bring water and a snack.

Hand tools and gloves will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you wish. Please do not bring power tools or herbicides.
